The Internet has opened a whole world of opportunities where not only humans but also machines can communicate and collaborate with each other in a continuous evolution. The massive direct interconnection of distant tiny devices (e.g. wireless sensors and RFID tags) by making use of the public network infrastructure will become an essential part of the Future Internet. In this landscape, an innovative Internet infrastructure referred as the Internet of Things is going to raise, integrating information related to the real world (from objects) and the virtual world.
The distributed nature and the complexity of the objects of the Internet of Things will make it the target of attacks. Hence, the main purpose of this project is to establish the foundation of a security and privacy infrastructure for the Internet of Things as a representative scenario of Future Internet applications. In this infrastructure, we will research on low-level security connection mechanisms, high-level security and privacy services, and novel cryptographic approaches specific for IoT environments.
More precisely, the goals are:
- Research on secure network connectivity mechanisms and protocols that assure the confidentiality, integrity, and authentication properties in the interaction among the different objects of the Internet of Things.
- Design of a set of security services (e.g. authorization, delegation, identity and privacy management, trust management) that will set the ground and facilitate the further development of secure IoT applications by other institutions and companies.
- Explore and analyze existing cryptographic primitives and mechanisms, as well as design of new and advanced ones, which are adequate to the inherent constraints and specific requirements of the IoT scenarios, protocols and services.
The project is aimed at conducting extensive research in the aforementioned security and privacy issues based on the exchanging visits for collaborative research discussion, supervision of research scholars, and conduction of workshops for knowledge dissemination.
