  • Overview of the Project
    A number of research initiatives have recently been launched in Europe and other industrialised countries regarding the design and development principles of the Future Internet. This term encompasses the emergence of future large heterogeneous and interconnected networked ICT infrastructures, like the Internet of Things (IoT).
    The IoT will go beyond today’s traditional boundaries of the virtual world by being linked to the real world, the world of physical objects or ‘things’. The link will be based on sensors, actuators, RFID tags, and other similar devices embedded in objects, in a number of billions, that will allow the network to have real-time information on the whereabouts of any object.
    In this landscape, there are many open security issues that demand urgent attention. It is necessary to explore which security requirements emerge in the new scenario of ‘things’; there is a need to research how those devices embarking processing capabilities can be made robust to network attacks; users will need to know how the new applications with objects affect the control over their personal information, etc. In other words, the development of the IoT is expected to come along with a new range of security services given that the exchange of information between different systems and objects, but also only among objects, will configure new and unexplored scenarios.

    Therefore, the goal of this project is to develop a Security Services Platform, the SPRINT Platform, specifically designed for the Internet of Things, that will allow and facilitate future IoT applications engineers and developers the straightforward integration of secure services into their software, guarantying in this way that further users of those IoT applications have their main security needs satisfied and covered. It is also important to note that we will consider a number of comprehensive security services for the SPRINT Platform, but we will do it at different levels.
    More precisely, besides the adaptation and creation of basic services supporting IoT security, we will build services that are related to secure network level communications. In this sense, a service for secure network connectivity among objects will be developed, as well as a distributed intrusion detection service. A supporting service for balancing QoS and security will be created too. On the other hand, and at a higher level, we will additionally foster services specifically reworked for the IoT case, like privacy and identity management, and trust management. Furthermore, we will develop a secure object location service that is inherent to objects of the IoT scenario. All these services, once integrated into the platform, will be evaluated with two appealing applications.
